Letter Jj Activities
Class Chart: As a group, discuss all the letter J items brought in to the class and print the words on chart paper. Beside each word, draw a picture beside the word and post on the wall as a reference for the children over the week.
Jigsaw Jeans Uppercase Letter Activity: Print an uppercase J on a cut out of blue jeans. Ask student to glue squares on the outline of the letter. Ask student for an example of a letter J word. Print word on the jeans.
Then cut the jeans into five pieces to make a puzzle. Ask student to print his or her name on the back of each piece. Place the puzzle pieces in an envelope to send home at the end of the day.
Jelly Bean Jar Lowercase Letter Activity: Print a lowercase j on a cut out of a jar. Ask student to glue colour ovals on the outline of the letter. Print the words jelly bean jar on the paper.
Jewellery Activity: Talk about the types of jewellery the students have seen before. Tell the class today each student will be making a piece of jewellery to take home. Cut pieces of string to the length each student would like and knot the end of the string. Provide a variety of beads for this activity. This activity works best as a small group activity with a teacher or parent volunteer.
Jungle Animals: Brainstorm about all the animals that live in the jungle. Record on chart paper and draw a picture of the animal. Use this chart for journal writing. Ask each student to pick his or her favourite animal and finish the sentence “I like_________.” Ask each student to draw a picture of the animal to illustrate the sentence.
Play Dough Jungle Animals Activity: Provide a variety of colours of play dough and have each student make his or her favourite jungle animal.
Recite Nursery Rhymes: Teach the students the nursery rhymes of Jack and Jill and Jack Be Nimble.
Letter J Books: Read the story Jack and the Beanstalk by Richard Walker [Barefoot Books, 2006] to the class. Find out what each child would have done differently after reading this story and record the answers. Write a class story using some of the suggestions from the children to rewrite a different version of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Taste-Test Foods Beginning With the Letter J: Here are some foods that begin with the letter J for the children to taste-test: jelly beans, jam sandwiches, assortment of jams, jelly doughnut, jam tart and jell-o.
Letter J Songs and Printables: The DTLK site has some wonderful songs and other activities to teach the letter J. Printing practice for the lowercase j is very important to review. Some children will not extend the hook of the letter past the bottom line. These students will start the lowercase j at the top of the line as with an uppercase J. But through practice this error is easily fixed.
Making a jigsaw puzzle, a bracelet, jungle animals or learning nursery rhymes are great activities when teaching the letter Jj. Each student will enjoy the variety of activities provided throughout the week and will look forward to the next letter of the alphabet.
